Service Description

Matariki is Aotearoa’s own turning of the new year; a time for reflecting on the past year and setting intentions for the future. We want to help you make something special to celebrate Matariki with your whānau! Come and learn the names of the stars in the Matariki cluster, the meanings and focus of each of the stars and choose one that speaks to you for your focus over the next year. After the making session we hope you can join us in sharing some kai and celebrate Matariki together! In this short, three hour class you can choose to make either a pair of earrings, a pendant or a special taonga that might be placed somewhere important to you. You’ll be guided through the process of heating and texturing metal, cutting and shaping with traditional jewellery tools. You will practice on smaller texture samples to practice creating star stamps and stamping out text with tiny letter stamps. You can also choose what metal you want to go with, and then move on to creating your earrings in either warm copper or yellow brass - with solid sterling silver earring hooks or posts. Our class materials pack includes everything you need for the class to make a super cool pair of shiny copper or brass earrings. Using these inexpensive materials allows us to have more creative fun and create larger earrings with less expense. However, if you’re committed to sterling silver, you can of course upgrade your materials for an extra $30 - $50. We use quality pre-made sterling silver earring wires, or earring posts with silicone stud backs for these taster classes so that you can focus on making the main part of the earrings and know that your findings will be just perfect. The outcome for this taster class is to have one pair of completed earrings or a pendant to wear away or gift to someone special.
